Firewall
A software firewall is esential if you are connecting to the internet for any length of time. It stops unathorised access to your computer (antivirus does not). Zonealarm is highly rated as a free personal software firewall and there are others such as Norton Personal Firewall which charge. Zonealarm have Zonealarm Pro which has additional features. By the way, if you have any form of permanent connection to the internet you should also have a hardware firewall.

Antivirus
The next thing you need if you are connecting to the internet and downloading files or receiving email is an antivirus package. There is a free version from Grisoft and ourpersonal favourite is Norton Antivirus.

Adobe Acrobat Reader
The most popular format for distributing electronic files, Adobe Acrobat Reader has become the de facto standard on the internet for distributing documents. Click here to download the latest version.

.Net Framework 1.1
Please note that this download is ca. 25mb and will take an hour or so over a 56k dial-up connection. Click here to commence download.

Google toolbar
Download the Google toolbar by clicking here and following instructions.

VNC remote server
An excellent piece of free software which enables you to provide demonstrations over the internet, log in to remote systems and so on and it is totally FREE and it works! Click here to download a copy.
